What Innovation Means at WAB

This year, through our Innovation Series, in collaboration with Stephen Taylor, our Director of Innovation, we’ll be sharing stories and examples of what innovation looks like across WAB. We’ll share stories from classrooms, examples from alumni, and insights from global partners. Our hope is that together, we can build a clearer picture of how innovation at WAB helps our students become better learners and prepared for life beyond WAB. |

At any moment in WAB, one group of students may be gathered around a table, sketching out ideas for a group project. They move desks, debate playfully, and test different approaches, with expert feedback from their teachers. In another class, students might be building robotics projects, learning cinematography or undertaking scientific research. Throughout their learning, students are iterating, thinking deeply and solving problems with creativity and critical thinking. This is what innovation looks like at WAB. |
When people hear the word innovation, they often think of new technology. At WAB, it means constantly finding better ways for students to learn, grow, and flourish. A spirit of innovation brings to life our Mission to Connect, Inspire, Challenge and Make a Difference. Sometimes this takes the shape of big, obvious changes like new programs or redesigned spaces. Other times, it is the small, everyday adjustments that teachers and students make to improve learning together, like trying something new, reflecting on what worked, and building from there.

Innovation at WAB means that success for students is personal. It’s about the ability to adapt, collaborate, and overcome obstacles. It reaches beyond technology into all elements of living and learning. That means focusing on skills, as well as deep knowledge, and the confidence to apply their learning in real situations beyond the school environment.
At the heart of innovation at WAB is student agency, to help students take ownership of their learning, make choices, see purpose in what they do, and take authentic action. Our goal is to help young people grow into thoughtful and creative individuals that shape their own paths with integrity and contribute to their communities.

In the weeks ahead, our Innovation Series will look more closely at the ideas that shape learning at WAB. We will define key terms like competencies, flourishing and agency and share how our students are learning and leading to make a difference in the world. Together, these stories will show how innovation at WAB empowers students’ learning with purpose, preparing them for the possible futures ahead.
