WAB Podcast | Inside WAB’s Middle School House System

WAB Podcast | Inside WAB’s Middle School House System

Three houses. One Middle School. Countless moments of connection. WAB’s House System builds teamwork, spirit, and a sense of belonging that lasts.

In this week’s WAB Podcast, we dive into the Middle School House System at WAB, now in its third year. Middle School Teacher Mr. Marnitz and students Vicky and Huining share how the  House system is bringing students and teachers together through teamwork, events, and shared school spirit.

When Mr. Marnitz first arrived at WAB four years ago, the House system looked very different.

“There were different groups and animals each year, but little continuation,” he explained. “Students would put in all this work to earn points and organize events, but it all reset the next year.”

That’s when the Middle School leadership team decided to create something lasting, three permanent houses that students would belong to throughout Grades 6 to 8: Dragon, Griffin, and Phoenix.

“By keeping the same houses across all three years, we could build real house spirit,” said Mr. Marnitz “Now we see excitement, teamwork, and pride growing each year, it’s become a real part of Middle School culture.”

Grade 8 student Huining (Griffin House) shared that the system encourages everyone to participate.

“You see people trying their best, especially on Sports Day,” she said. “Even book reviews count for house points now, so everyone’s finding ways to contribute.”

From Spooky October Fashion Shows to Middle School’s Got Talent, house assemblies and themed events are student-led, fun-filled opportunities to get involved.

“Hosting assemblies is one of my favorite parts,” said Vicky (Grade 8, Dragon House). “It encourages other students to volunteer and join in. It really brings people together.”

For Huining, the best part is how the system connects all grade levels.

“You see Grade 6, 7, and 8 students cheering each other on, like during tug-of-war or other games. It’s a chance to meet new people and work together.”

Teachers, too, are part of the action, joining in events, dressing up for Spirit Weeks, and earning points for their houses.

“It’s great to see teachers and students all in it together,” said Mr. Marnitz. “That sense of community is what makes it special.”

As the House system continues to grow, students are already thinking ahead about how to make it even better. From pizza parties to digital certificates, the students were excited to share their ideas.

“What’s special,” Mr. Marnitz said, “is seeing students grow from just participating to leading, planning events, motivating others, and creating something that lasts.”

Tune in to hear how students and teachers are shaping what it means to belong at WAB.
