WAB Podcast | Introducing Global Citizenship in Action

Global Citizenship in Action (GCiA) is WAB’s next step in our long-standing commitment to developing responsible, compassionate leaders. More than just service clubs, GCiA provides structured time during the school day for students in Grades 9–12 to engage in meaningful, student-led projects that connect global issues to real needs in our local context.
In this week’s WAB Podcast, we hear from Keira and Evan, HS student leaders putting this vision into action. Kira leads KM for Love, a group supporting Dew Drops: a Beijing-based orphanage for medically compromised children. Her leadership involves not just fundraising but also organizing volunteer trips, coordinating with community partners, and mentoring younger students. Evan leads Hearts of Hope, a new initiative linking health and wellbeing with global issues. They have launched awareness campaigns for breast cancer and collaborated with our school nurses to run first aid training for both students and parents, making health knowledge a shared community resource.

What makes GCiA powerful is its blend of agency, service, and learning. As Global Citizenship Coordinator Angie Crouch explains, students build competencies in understanding global issues, taking local action, developing communication skills, and cultivating empathy. These projects push students to expand the “WAB bubble,” connecting them with diverse communities and giving them the chance to lead in real-world contexts.
The students also reflect on how GCiA has shaped them personally. Keira highlights the importance of real-world student-driven service, projects chosen and led out of passion, not obligation, allowing for deeper connection and meaning. Evan emphasizes how small, practical steps can have global impact, noting that “being a global citizen is not just about thinking big, but about making changes that improve lives in our community.”
Through projects like these, students develop resilience, problem-solving, and collaboration skills that prepare them for life beyond WAB. At its heart, GCiA is innovation with purpose: helping students grow as compassionate leaders who think critically, act ethically, and shape a better world together.
