Building Confidence Through Tiger Leadership

Building Confidence Through Tiger Leadership

Leadership at WAB grows through action, reflection, and connection. Through our Tiger Leadership Program, students take real action, coaching teams, producing live events, and creating moments that bring the community together. They learn what it means to inspire others, build trust, and lead with confidence. For Grade 11 student Ida, that action comes through coaching younger athletes.

“I’ve learned so much about communication and how to handle a team,” Ida said. “The skills I use in coaching, from giving feedback to building confidence, are things I now apply in my classes and when captaining my own teams.”

As part of the Coaches in Training (CIT) program, high school students like Ida and James (G11) lead Middle School sports teams throughout the year. They work alongside WAB coaches to guide practices, mentor younger players, and learn what it takes to create a fun, supportive team culture.

“It’s really meaningful,” James shared. “You build connections with the kids. They come to you after practice, tell you what they want to work on, and you can see them grow. Because we’re closer in age, they feel comfortable, it’s more approachable.”

For Darya (G10), Tiger Leadership takes a different form, behind the camera and in front of the WAB community. As part of the Tiger Sports Entertainment Network (TSEN), she helps organize, livestream, and promote major athletic events like APAC tournaments.

“It’s all about making the event an experience, not just a game,” Darya said. “Seeing the joy on people’s faces when they watch the videos or highlight reels we’ve created,  that’s really rewarding.”

Across programs, from event management and coaching to media production, Tiger Leadership empowers students to explore their interests,  earn certifications, and develop the real-world skills that make a difference. Athletics and Activities Director Kirby Boychuk says that transformation is what the program is all about: “What’s really special is seeing students grow from being a bit unsure to stepping up as true leaders,” he said. “Six weeks later, they’re the ones inspiring and motivating others,  even leading huddles or running drills. The Middle School students look up to them as role models, and that kind of peer connection makes our teams stronger.”

From the sidelines to the spotlight, Tiger Leadership is helping WAB students discover what it means to lead with confidence and community spirit, the kind of leadership that lasts long after the final whistle.
