Students as Socially Responsible Leaders

Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) recently held the two-day Socially Responsible Leadership Workshop on campus, bringing together student leaders and educators from WAB, International School of Beijing, Beijing Academy, Dulwich College Beijing, Daystar Academy, and Keystone Academy. Designed by Inspire Citizens in partnership with co-hosts WAB and ISB, the workshop aimed to strengthen students’ capacity to lead ethical, inclusive, and sustainable action through the CIS Socially Responsible Leadership framework and the Profiles of WAB Alumni.
Day 1: Understanding Leadership for Impact
The workshop opened in BLU Theatre with community-building activities that encouraged students to connect across schools. Through morning sessions facilitated by Inspire Citizens, students learned to link their personal values with meaningful social change, crafting their own “Hope and Impact Statements.”
After a plant-based lunch, students explored “Tools for Impactful Project Management,” including back mapping, delegation, collaboration strategies, and impact analysis. The day concluded with students’ reflecting and setting intentions, helping participants identify how they want to grow as socially responsible leaders.

Day 2: Leading Together Through Collaboration
Day 2 began with keynotes from Nicole Bonnah (from Tap In Think Tank; Beijing Inclusion Network) and Terry Townshend (from Wild Beijing). Their stories of advocacy, inclusion, and conservation encouraged students to view belonging and environmental stewardship as essential leadership responsibilities.
Following student-led community-building activities, participants took part in discussions where they shared their developing ideas, exchanged feedback, and learned from one another’s projects. Students then joined two of four expert workshops; topics included ethical leadership, environmental sustainability, conservation and collaboration and belonging.
In the afternoon, student groups applied what they had learned by working together to design actionable project plans that incorporated ethical design, investigation, and impact measurement. The workshop concluded with peer feedback and a circle of recognition to celebrate the collaboration and growth shared across schools.

Student Reflections: Leadership in Action
Throughout the workshop, students highlighted how structures, relationships, and intentional reflection strengthened their understanding of socially responsible leadership:
“Collaborating with new peers and community partners made projects more productive, and delegating tasks strengthened teamwork.”
“I learned to use structured planning tools, work backward from goals, and write a strong Why statement to organize actionable steps.”
“I will conduct unbiased research to identify real needs and consider potential impacts to design sustainable, ethical projects.”
“I developed leadership and communication skills for inclusive, socially responsible work and can now apply these practices to create meaningful, lasting change.”
WAB Grade 8 student Andrea shared how the experience helped her grow in confidence and purpose: “Being able to attend the Socially Responsible Leadership Conference helped me grow in a really practical way. The workshops on advocacy and project management gave me tools I can actually use in my school clubs, and the community-building activities helped me get more comfortable speaking up and working with people from other schools. It opened my eyes to how small ideas can turn into real projects when you have the right skills and support.”
And as summed up by Global Citizenship Coordinator, Angie Crouch: “Through this workshop, our students strengthened the knowledge, skills, and mindsets they need to lead with empathy, creativity, and ethical awareness. These are the qualities at the heart of WAB’s vision for socially responsible, future-ready learners.”
