MS Publishing Juniors Bringing WAB Stories to Life

In this week’s episode of The WAB Podcast, three members of the Middle School Publishing Juniors team step out from behind the pages to share how they tell the stories of our community. As the team behind the MS newsletters and MS yearbook, they share how they choose story topics, interview peers and teachers, and design layouts.
Catherine, Angelia, and Akshita describe why they joined the team: curiosity about how yearbooks are created, a love of writing, and a desire to make publications feel more relevant to MS students. They have discovered that Publishing Juniors is about making sure student perspectives are visible and valued across the year.
On their process, the three students share that Publishing Juniors is student led from initial conception to final print. First listing out events and ideas, prioritizing which stories will be most interesting or important for their peers, arranging and conducting interviews, and then transforming those conversations into engaging articles. From there, they collaborate on headlines, images, and layouts, using tools like Canva and AI to create visually appealing pages that appeal to their peers. Each role: writer, section editor, designer depends on each other, so communication and collaboration are key.

They also share honest reflections on challenges, such as balancing different design opinions, fitting big topics into short pieces, and working to make sure every voice is represented fairly. Through these moments, they highlight the skills they are building: leadership and collaboration across roles, and the confidence to communicate with teachers and classmates as interviewees and partners.
Looking ahead, the Publishing Juniors team are excited to see their work come together in the finished yearbook and upcoming newsletter, including features like the Science Showcase. For them, the biggest takeaway is understanding what it really takes to move from an idea to a final publication and that each issue is a team effort where student voice, creativity, and responsibility all play a part in making WAB visible on every page.
