Intercultural Celebrations at WAB

Intercultural Celebrations at WAB

This Monday marked WAB's first Day X of the year with Intercultural Day, bringing students from every section of the school together around a shared theme.

Day X happens four times a year, each one follows the same idea: across ages and sections, our whole school comes together to connect, learn, and take action, with cross-divisional buddy relationships carrying the connections all year long.

Intercultural Day celebrated the many cultures, languages, and experiences that make up our community. The morning opened with an all-community assembly on Tiger Field, with students wearing clothing connected to their cultures and carrying flags they had drawn with their buddies.

A large crowd of people gathers on a green athletic field surrounding several people holding large map cutouts of the continents.

Students, parents and staff also added their names to giant continent parachutes, representing places their families come from, places they have lived and places they feel connected to.

“Intercultural learning is part of who we are as a WAB community,” said Head of School Dr. Marta Medved Krajnović. “It means being curious about one another, listening, and learning from both our similarities and our differences. It also means continually working to create physical and emotional spaces where everyone feels they can belong.”

After the assembly, parents rolled up their sleeves with our China Studies team and Chinese Link volunteers, making mooncakes ahead of Mid-Autumn Festival. Our Culture Connection Workshop invited parents to create a small piece representing something they carry from their culture and to share the story behind it, contributing to a growing WAB Cultural Mosaic: a collective display of the identities, traditions, languages, and journeys woven through our community.

Culture was shared through storytelling too, as our Friends in the Library parent volunteers shared intercultural stories in different languages over lunch and break times, and Korean Link parents introduced cultural games and activities.

Intercultural learning was also the theme of our first WAB Parent Lab of the year, a new whole-school workshop format offering families a range of practical information sessions. Led by our counseling team, these sessions explored parenting intercultural children and how families and schools can support young people as they navigate culture, identity and belonging.

Thank you to everyone in our community who celebrated their cultures with us and for continuing to make WAB a place where everyone belongs.
