Innovation with Purpose: Global Citizenship and Socially Responsible Leadership

This year, through our Innovation Series, in collaboration with Stephen Taylor, our Director of Innovation, we’ll be sharing stories and examples of what innovation looks like across WAB. We’ll share stories from classrooms, examples from alumni, and insights from global partners. Our hope is that together, we can build a clearer picture of how innovation at WAB helps our students become better learners and prepared for life beyond WAB. |
| On a WAB Wild trip, a group of students notice how much plastic waste is being thrown away at a campsite. Back at school, they don't just shrug it off, they launch a lunchtime campaign to reduce single-use plastics. It isn't about holding a title or adding to their résumés. It is about noticing a problem, acting on it, and taking responsibility for making a difference. |
For us, innovation is about preparing students to be thoughtful, responsible contributors to their communities and the world around them. “In GCiA, students don’t just study global issues, they collaborate with partners, take initiative, and create meaningful change in their communities and beyond,” Angelia Crouch, Global Citizenship Coordinator.
Global citizenship at WAB means understanding that our lives are deeply connected with others, across cultures and communities, and choosing to act with care. It shows up daily in classrooms, projects, and service, from student-led initiatives to collaborating on projects with local partners on global issues. At WAB, socially responsible leadership is about making decisions that consider others, acting ethically, and contributing to the common good. Competencies like ethical decision-making, collaboration, and communication anchor this approach, ensuring that leadership is rooted in responsibility.

Through purpose-driven innovation, WAB students engage with real-world challenges alongside impactful organizations, here are just some of the examples:
- Roots & Shoots Beijing
- Horses Offering People Enrichment (HOPE)
- Dew Drops
- Rainbow Angels Bakery
- Lujiawan Central School (Mingde School)
- Our Learning House
- Shared Harvest

In a future shaped by AI, global change, and uncertainty, technical skills alone aren’t enough. Universities and employers seek young people who can collaborate, think ethically, and act responsibly. Attributes like empathy, resilience, and responsibility are what truly prepare students to flourish; qualities that are embedded in our Profiles of WAB Alumni.
For us, innovation and purpose belong together. Innovation at WAB is always linked to helping students grow as learners and as people who can make a difference. When our students notice a problem, take initiative, and act responsibly, they show what it truly means to be global citizens and socially responsible leaders.
