Exploring Chinese Culture through Drums
Exploring Chinese Culture through Drums
Grade 5 students at WAB have recently concluded their Chinese Drumming unit, an experience that blends traditional Chinese culture with performing arts.
Wang Wenjing, WAB's China Studies Director, introduced the historical context of Chinese drumming. She explained that this ancient art form dates back thousands of years to the Shang and Zhou dynasties and serves as a powerful metaphor, with the rhythmic beats symbolizing the human heartbeat, life, and energy.
Wenjing further added that China Global Coherence is one of WAB's core values, which is reflected in the Grade 5 Performing Arts through the inclusion of Chinese drum lessons.
Established in 2013, this program has been running for 12 years, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with cultural traditions. Professional drum teachers, some of whom performed in the Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony, have been invited to guide students in mastering this art form. The opportunity to learn Chinese drumming extends beyond Grade 5, with Middle School and High School students also able to explore this instrument in their Performing Arts curriculum and participate in performances at cultural events like Temple Fair and Graduation.
Brandon DiTieri, Head of Performing Arts at the Elementary School, highlighted the benefits of this unit. Students not only worked diligently to master complex rhythms but also developed their musical skills, deepened their understanding of cultural expression, and learned the importance of teamwork in performance.
