WAB Podcast | Supporting the Transition from Elementary to Middle School

WAB Podcast | Supporting the Transition from Elementary to Middle School

For many students, the move from Elementary School to Middle School is exciting and can also be a bit stressful. New spaces, new routines, and new expectations can feel like a big leap. In this week’s episode of the WAB Podcast, Middle School Vice Principal Ms. Huiman and Grade 6 Learning Leader Mr. Ian unpack what this transition looks like and how WAB supports every child along the way.

One of the biggest shifts students experience in Grade 6 is increased independence. Students begin moving between classes, working with multiple subject teachers, and taking greater responsibility for their learning, belongings, and time. While this change can feel significant at first, it is carefully scaffolded. Through mentor groups and daily flex blocks, students are explicitly taught how to organize themselves, manage routines, make responsible choices, and navigate new situations with confidence.

Importantly, much of what students know and value remains the same. Although Middle School is located in a different building on campus, the culture, relationships, and values that define life at WAB continue seamlessly. Students maintain friendships, build new connections, and are supported by teachers who know them well: academically, socially, and emotionally.

Learning in Grade 6 builds directly on students’ Elementary School experiences. The inquiry skills developed through the PYP Exhibition become a strong foundation for the Middle Years Programme (MYP), where students investigate concepts, conduct research, think critically, and communicate their learning in meaningful ways. Across subjects, students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas deeply, and apply their learning to real-world contexts, sometimes even sharing their work with audiences.

Beyond academics, Middle School places a strong emphasis on personal growth. Students develop skills such as self-management, collaboration, communication, and decision-making. Opportunities like Day 9 empower students to take ownership of their learning by choosing activities and subjects aligned with their interests and passions, further strengthening agency and motivation.

Belonging is intentionally nurtured from the very first days of Grade 6. The Middle School House System for instance, creates a vibrant sense of community through friendly competition, shared activities, and cross-grade connections, helping every student feel seen, valued, and supported.

Students are never navigating this transition alone. Counselors, learning leaders, and support specialists work closely with mentor teachers to monitor student wellbeing, deliver social-emotional learning lessons, and provide individualized support when needed. Teachers meet regularly to share observations and respond flexibly to students’ evolving needs, ensuring care is proactive rather than reactive.

The transition to Middle School also begins well before the first day of Grade 6. In the Spring, Grade 5 students engage with Middle School teachers and students through visits, panels, and shared activities, giving them a preview of what lies ahead and easing anxieties long before August arrives.

As Mr. Ian and Ms. Huiman emphasize, feeling nervous is normal, and temporary. With time, routines become familiar, confidence grows, and students  discover that Middle School continues to be a place where they are supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow.
