Beyond the Classroom, Into the Wild

Beyond the Classroom, Into the Wild

Imagine stepping out of the classroom and into the crisp, open air of the Mi Yun mountains. The morning sun stretches over the Bai He River, backpacks thump against students’ shoulders, and a quiet excitement settles in as the day’s adventure begins. In front of them are real cliffs, real trails, and real challenges: an experiential classroom where nature becomes both the teacher and the test. This is WAB Wild.

WAB Wild is our outdoor education program, designed to extend learning far beyond our school campus. Teachers see students in Grades 5 through 8, watching them grow from beginners into capable, confident young adventurers. Each year builds on the last, gradually increasing complexity and independence, from day trips to multi-day expeditions.

On the recent Grade 7 trip, what began as a lesson in ropes, knots, climbing and balance on campus became decision-making on real rock, testing our students’ teamwork. For many students, this is the first time they’ve climbed outdoors. Alongside technical skills, like belaying, navigation, and survival basics, they focused equally on connection. Students reflected on what it means to move through natural spaces responsibly, learning about sustainability, local agriculture, and the history of the valley they explore. They picked up litter, studied ecosystems, and practiced environmental stewardship.

The program’s design is intentionally developmental and meant to push students outside their comfort zone. Students echo this sentiment. They talked about building trust with classmates, being there for each other when a friend is scared, and learning to support each other on the trail or rock face. “It deepens our understanding of what’s around us, not just what’s in our classroom,” one student explains. “You can be comfortable in uncomfortable places.”

In a generation where many young people spend more time indoors, WAB Wild offers something rare: a chance to reconnect with nature, with peers, and with themselves. It’s an essential part of how WAB helps learners develop their leadership and resilience beyond the four walls of a classroom.
