Dutch language classes have been a part of WAB since the school was founded in 1994. To offer the best quality of Dutch language learning, WAB works with a qualified Dutch teacher, specifically hired to run the Dutch language program organized by De Rode Leeuw (The Red Lion). De Rode Leeuw is a recognized NTC location connected to the Dutch Education Abroad network (Stichting NOB).

The program uses official Dutch teaching materials and the Dutch National Dia testing. Dutch and Belgian cultural aspects are also included in the program, giving students a true sense of cultural identity. Every 2 to 4 years we receive a visit from the Dutch Inspectorate of Education (Nederlandse Onderwijsinspectie) to ensure that the quality of our program is maintained. De Rode Leeuw proudly received the renewed accreditation in March 2023.

The Dutch program is an after-school program that runs from Monday through Thursday for Elementary, Middle, and High School students. The classes are also open to Dutch-speaking students who do not attend WAB. If the after-school program is not fitting for your child, other possibilities are the Saturday morning class and the extra-curricular activities.

Independent fees apply for each student per full year:

€1.800 (2023-2024), which includes:

·     2 to 3 hours of class per week in small groups.

·     All Dutch educational materials and online practice programs and tests.

·     A detailed week schedule with schoolwork and homework.

·     An individualized learning plan.

·     Two report cards and teacher conferences (in February and June).

·     All organized extra-curricular activities (such as Sinterklaas, Kinderboekenweek, Koningsspelen).

Nederlands moedertaalprogramma op WAB

Het Nederlandse moedertaalprogramma maakt al sinds de oprichting in 1994 onderdeel uit van WAB. Om de best mogelijke kwaliteit te bieden werkt WAB met een gekwalificeerde Nederlandse leerkracht, die speciaal geworven is om schoolbreed het Nederlandse moedertaalprogramma te organiseren en doceren. De lessen worden georganiseerd door De Rode Leeuw. De Rode Leeuw is een erkende NTC-locatie aangesloten bij het wereldwijde netwerk van Stichting NOB. 

Het programma gebruikt officiële Nederlandse lesmethodes en er worden Diatoetsen afgenomen. Daarnaast wordt er aandacht besteed aan Nederlandse en Belgische culturele aspecten, wat leerlingen een gevoel van culturele identiteit geeft. Iedere 2 tot 4 jaar ontvangen wij een inspecteur van de Nederlandse Onderwijsinspectie om de kwaliteit van ons programma te waarborgen. In maart 2023 heeft De Rode Leeuw met trots de hernieuwde accreditatie van de inspecteur ontvangen.

Het Nederlandse moedertaalprogramma is een naschools programma voor leerlingen van het basis- en voortgezet onderwijs dat van maandag tot en met donderdag plaatsvindt op WAB. De lessen zijn ook toegankelijk voor andere Nederlandstalige kinderen die niet bij WAB naar school gaan. Wanneer het naschoolse programma niet aansluit voor jullie kind, zijn de zaterdagochtendlessen of de extra-curriculaire activiteiten een optie.

Schoolgeld voor iedere leerling per volledig schooljaar:

€1.800 (2023-2024), dit is inclusief:

The Finnish School in Beijing offers Finnish language teaching for children living abroad (ages 0 -18). The groups meet on Saturdays, twice per month (excluding public holidays) for three hours per session and after school at WAB. As of Autumn 2023, Finnish school has started teaching Finnish also from the basics.
One of the main goals of the school is to educate students in Finnish culture. Teaching methods for the younger groups mainly involve fairy tales, games, and activities. Arts, crafts, dancing, musical activities, and conversational exercises are also integrated. Students and families who choose to enroll for the online course (Kulkurikoulu) which follows Finland's national Finnish language teaching guidelines, can be supported by weekly afterschool studies.
From Junior Grade one on, children can take part in Kulkuri Online Course. Studies follow the Finnish National Curriculum in Finnish, and at the end of Grade 9, it is possible to take a final exam and to get an official grade and diploma in the Finnish language.
A well-managed and updated library supports language studies as well as all cultural events we arrange together with Finnish School staff and parent volunteers. 
Classes are provided twice per month on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the WAB Elementary School. Additionally, there are weekly after-school activities for small groups.

Svenska i Beijing (SiB) offers Swedish at the Western Academy of Beijing.

SiB offers Swedish lessons to children who use Swedish as an active language at home.

The lessons offered aim to make the children curious about the Swedish language, maintain their level, and use the language in contexts other than the family. We offer our students to speak Swedish in a playful way, about Sweden and the Swedish culture.

During the academic year 23/24, we have one group at WAB (Room 2206, ES building):

Wednesday, 4 p.m to 5:45 p.m. for children up to 11 years old

We begin the class on August 30th with an information/annual meeting, where both parents and kids are welcome to meet the board and our teacher.

Svenska i Beijing (SiB) ger återigen lektioner i svenska på Western Academy of Beijing.

SiB erbjuda svensklektioner till barn som har svenska som levande språk i hemmet.

De lektioner som erbjuds syftar till att göra barnen nyfikna på det svenska språket, bibehålla sin nivå och använda språket i andra kontexter än familjen. Vi erbjuder våra elever att på ett lekfullt sätt prata svenska om Sverige och den svenska kulturen.

Vi har under läsåret 23/24 en grupper i WABs lokaler (Room 2206, ES building):

onsdagar, kl 16.00-17.45 för barn tom. 11 år 

Höstterminen börjar den 30 augusti med ett informations/årsmöte där både vårdnadshavare och barn är välkomna att träffa styrelsen och vår lärare.

French Home Language may return next school year.

Danish Home Language is not available for this 2023 year but may recommence in the next school year.

The German-speaking community offers a German Home language program at WAB, run by the German speaking community.
All students can join the after-school lessons.
 
Elementary School Program
Two courses are offered, one for beginners and one for advanced students. Groups are defined depending on the language level of the students. Lessons are on campus, after school, each once a week. 
 The total cost of a 1-hour session is 500 RMB and the parents of the students in each class share this cost. 
 
Middle and High School Program
For MS and HS we have a professional teacher who conducts online sessions from Europe. 
The courses are defined according to the needs of students and the wishes of parents. Currently, we offer one group session for Grades 5-7, one group session for Grades 5/6, lessons in small groups, and individual learning sessions. Lessons are once a week, language level is A1-C1/C2 (beginner to mother tongue level). Costs depend on the size of the group and skill level. We recommend parents talk to the teacher and decide on which lessons will meet the needs and goals of the students. 

For students who will be undertaking self-taught German language as one of their IB language options, private tutoring/lessons can be arranged individually. For a 2-year IB Diploma Program (IBDP) course, the tutoring cost is estimated to be approximately 4.000 EUR. Please contact Mrs. Angelia Crouch at angelia_crouch@wab.edu for further details.

Die deutschsprachigen WAB-Eltern organisieren für Schüler aller Altersstufen und Sprachkompetenzen in Eigenregie Kurse auf verschiedenen Niveaus im Nachmittagsprogramm. Alle Schüler sind in den Sprachkursen herzlichst willkommen!

Elementary School/ Grundschule
Für diese Altersstufe bieten wir zwei Kurse an, einen für Anfänger und einen für Fortgeschrittene. Die Gruppen treffen sich jeweils einmal pro Woche nach der Schule auf dem WAB-Campus. Die Kosten pro Stunde belaufen sich auf 500 RMB, welche unter den Eltern der jeweils teilnehmenden Kinder geteilt werden. 
 

Middle & High School/ Mittel- und Oberstufe
Die Gruppenkurse und individuellen Stunden werden hier online von einer Deutschlehrerin in Europa gehalten.

Zur Zeit gibt es in der Mittelstufe zwei Gruppenkurse, einen für die Klassen 5-7 und einen mit Kindern der Klassen 5/6. Die Gruppen sind bewußt klein gehalten und kommen sehr gut bei den Kindern an. Der Unterricht findet auch hier einmal wöchentlich statt, die momentanen Niveaus sind A1-C1/C2 (Anfänger bis Muttersprachler), und die Kosten ergeben sich einmal aus der Gruppengröße aber auch aus der jeweiligen Sprachkompetenz der Kinder. Individualunterricht wird auch für diese Altersgruppe angeboten und vor allem von Eltern, deren Kinder mit einem etwaigen Deutsch-IB liebäugeln, in Erwägung gezogen. 

In jedem Fall empfehlen wir, daß sich interessierte Eltern direkt mit der Kursleiterin vernetzen und so eruieren, welches Format das passendste für ihr Kind sein mag. 

SchülerInnen der Oberstufe nehmen in der Regel Einzelunterricht online, zugeschnitten auf das jeweilige Sprachniveau und die Prioritäten der Jugendlichen. 
Wer im Selbststudium Deutsch als IB-Fach wählen möchte, kann den dazugehörigen Unterricht individuell arrangieren. Derzeit belaufen sich die Kosten für einen 2-jährigen “IB Diploma Program (IBDP)”-Kurs auf ungefähr 4.000 EUR.
