Target 5 in Action: Academic and Intellectual Thinking

As we discussed in our last blog post, Target 5 is about balancing academic knowledge and intellectual knowledge in every student's learning experience.

It's the intellectual knowledge that allows students to responsibly apply their learning to make a positive impact on the communities and environments around them. At school, they learn empathy and morality, not just "standard school subjects" like math or science.

This type of learning already takes place at WAB. Every school year we see students forming groups to make a difference in the world. The Jiashan-Jingxi Project is a perfect example: After rebuilding a school that was wrecked by an earthquake, students have now transformed the project and invited their teachers to create learning experiences, tutoring, and training for the school community in Jiashan. The members of the group offer their skills and knowledge not for their own personal gain, but because they see how the world can benefit from their actions.

There are dozens of other groups and individuals at WAB who make similar positive contributions to society. The change we will see at WAB as we progress through the FLoW21 journey is a higher level of integration of these "intellectual" lessons into the curricular day-to-day learning of our students.
