FLoW21 in Action: Target 8

As we explained in our last post, Target 8 recognizes people learn differently and at different speeds. To maximize learning for each individual student, experiences should be tailored and timetables should be flexible to allow for their different needs or interests.

This may mean students taking assessments at different times for the same subject, based on the time needed to reach a level of competence. It may mean being grouped in learning communities with students of different ages who are working at similar levels in a specific area. It may mean more one-on-one instruction time for a student who is learning at a very fast or slow pace.

Just this month, world-renowned trainer, speaker, and educational researcher Robert J. Marzano tweeted about the benefits of competence-based learning in a simple table from his new book, The New Art and Science of Teaching.

The competence-based approach will have a major impact on student groupings, timetables, assessments, and many other aspects of the day-to-day school life. FLoW21 Committees – such as the Timetables and Curriculum committees – are working toward developing the scaffolds that will allow students to flourish in a competence-based environment.

To learn more on this subject, watch this TED Talk by Sal Khan, the founder of the innovative Khan Academy, a non-profit educational institution that offers online tools for learning. Keep in mind, the term "mastery learning" is synonymous with "competence-based learning."
