FLoW21 in Action: Target 7

Target 7 is focused on the evaluation of what is essential for students to learn.

A key part of FLoW21's Phase 2 is that all teachers in all school sections will review our current curriculum to determine the "essential competencies." (We define this in-depth in our previous post, Target 7 Explained.)

Progression through essential competencies ensures that students will gain the essential skills, knowledge, and understandings necessary to be successful in the next phase of their learning.

Teachers, who are experts in their subject areas, will work in teams to reaffirm that the vertically phased curriculum is relevant to student learning. The curriculum review is a natural and on-going practice for all high-performing schools around the world.

We will continue to work within the IB framework, consult leading international schools around the world, and invite educational experts to go through this process with us.

Determining essentials will not limit the vast opportunities students have to study a variety of subjects. In fact, the process will open up time for students to pursue negotiable areas of study, which means those subjects that are of special of interest or for further enrichment.
