FLoW21 in Action: Target 2 - WAB Develops Self-Directed Learners

Self-directed learning develops students in more ways than just acquiring academic knowledge and skills. It fosters growth of independent research and learning skills, enhances students' engagement with subjects, and teaches time-management and organizational skills.

WAB offers several ways for students to self-direct their learning. One way is for High School students to take part in the WAB Capstone Program, allocating 20% of the school day to pursuing a subject or skill of interest through a guided extended project and internship. You can learn more about the project in the video below.

Other examples at WAB include:

  • Grade 10 students' Personal Project, a requirement of completing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP).
  • Grade 12 students' Extended Essay, in which they choose a topic, research it, and write an in-depth analysis. This is a required part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme(IB DP) which does not involve any classrooms or set schedule outside of the final deadline.
  • Students in Grade 5 working with their teachers to establish personalized learning goals, researching and assigning themselves tasks to accomplish those goals, independently accessing resources and developing an individualized timetable for each week to complete tasks.
  • Taking online courses that count for credit toward the IB DP.
  • Having a choice of books to read in a literature class.
