WAB’s Model United Nations Students Take Home 3 Awards at DIMUN XII

On March 17, WAB’s Model United Nations (MUN) club members picked up three awards at the DIMUN (Dulwich International Model United Nations) XIII: Most Passionate Delegate, Most Diplomatic Delegate and Most Improved Delegate.

The conference was hosted by Dulwich International in Beijing and included 115 delegates from eight different schools. Students were particularly excited about this conference as it was the first in-person event since the pandemic.

“This is my second year of doing MUN and DIMUN XIII was my fourth conference so the procedure was not new necessarily, but the fact that everything was now in-person raised the stakes by a lot. Being in-person, the event allowed me to meet amazing people who I have kept in touch with even after the conference, and this was a trait that was not present in the online conference and was a positive surprise,” said Grade 9 student Vaino-Veikka.

The conference was themed “Building Bridges” and sought to address a multitude of divides in the world today through unity, peace, and security.

Vaino-Veikka was named the “most diplomatic delegate” for his representation of Brazil in the Environment Commission. He succeeded in unanimously pushing through a resolution that responded to the environmental impact of satellites and the issue of ocean acidification.

“It truly was a fun one and opened our eyes to find ways to reach an agreement with people you don't always agree with. DIMUN was also a great place to make new friends and become better at public speaking. Lastly, the theme of bridging divides was very strongly present throughout the whole conference and forced the delegates to think more critically.”

Grade 8 student Minji S. was awarded the most improved delegate in the World Health Assembly with her resolution on disease control in humanitarian emergencies.

“The part that excited me the most about DIMUN XIII was engaging to help solve essential issues worldwide. Debating and critically thinking to improve the resolution, including adding, changing, and striking some parts of the resolution helped me think and reflect on what could be done to make the resolutions relevant, specific, and helpful for the issue of disease control in the aspect of the World Health Assembly.”

Last but not least, Grade 9 student Jayo J. was named “most passionate delegate” for his resolution on the crisis in Haiti representing the Security Council.

“MUN was quite nice this time because it was fruitful. I learned many things that I have not learned before; for example, I learned about Brazil. Congratulations to everyone involved!” he said.
