For the second consecutive year, the WAB community is coming together to extend the Spring Festival tradition of hongbao to support education in rural China.
To celebrate the Chinese New Year, it is customary to give hongbao or "red envelopes" with money to people you care for and love. As we enter the Year of the Tiger, the WAB community is hosting the “Give a Red Packet (Hongbao) Campaign” to support Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC), a non-profit group that provides scholarships for young women.
Each student, teacher and staff member will receive a red packet at school with a small message on the back, which can be filled with some bank notes and brought back to school by February 21 and dropped into collection boxes in each school section. You can see last year's Year of the Ox collection box in the photo above. It will be also possible to donate via WeChat using the QR code found on the message given with the envelope.
For the WAB community, education is the key to success. During the past three years, thanks to the generosity of the WAB community, we were able to raise 120,000 RMB every year to sponsor 20 girls to attend High School, and these girls will now graduate in June. Having raised RMB43,200 through sales of angels at the recent Community Market, Charity Link hopes to continue this tradition of providing 20 scholarships in 2022.
EGRC was established in 2005 with the vision that educated women have educated children. In 16 years, EGRC has provided financial sponsorship and emotional support to over 1,400 girls for their high school and university education, and the girls achieved over 99% graduation rate. Currently there are 535 high school students in EGRC's program, in both Gansu and Yunnan provinces.
To celebrate the start of the Year of the Tiger, let's come together as a community to make a difference and help other children have a better future.
Special thanks to Head of WAB Charity Link Delphine Labille for contributing to this story.
