Strategy 2022+ - Inclusion at WAB - We All Belong

The development of WAB’s Strategy 2022+  – the framework that will guide our school into the future – was a highly consultative process that took place throughout 2021 and brought together all stakeholders from our school community: parents, students, staff, alumni and board members. Through a series of student-led workshops, WAB was able to generate valuable data to affirm our core values, mission and philosophy, and to decide on the new strategic areas of focus. One of the focus areas to emerge from this process was WAB’s work around I-DEAS: Inclusion through Diversity, Equity, Anti-racism and Social Justice.

An I-DEAS Steering Committee was formed with representatives from all our community and they have been working on developing definitions on what inclusion means at WAB. These definitions have now been finalized and we are proud to share them with our community and publish them on our website.

“Creating teacher-led positions was a great way to start the conversation of the work around Inclusion through Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism and Social Justice at WAB with students and colleagues. After an exhaustive search of the definitions for these terms, we crafted our own for the community at WAB,” said Angela Langlands, Grade 3 Learning Leader and member of WAB’s I-DEAS Steering Committee.

As part of these efforts to define I-DEAS, WAB signed up to the Global Equality Collective (GEC). We are using GEC’s groundbreaking app to carry out self-assessments covering different areas of inclusion. This allows WAB to benchmark where we are now and collectively decide where improvement is needed. WAB’s teachers and leaders have also been taking training courses with our accreditation partner Council of International Schools (CIS), which is helping us solidify our understanding of I-DEAS and moving it forward into practice.

“An important part of WAB 2022+ strategy is preparing students for the world outside and after WAB, so that they can be both champions of inclusion, and also understand how personal and delicate inclusion conversations can be. With that in mind, our high school I-DEAS lead teachers Keri-Lee Beasley and Lucy Lu, are currently working with student clubs and preparing for an inclusion-related sharing of experiences with representatives from our diplomatic community,” said Dr. Marta Medved Krajnovic, WAB’s Head of School.

“What we ultimately want to achieve is for all members of our community to feel included. That they belong on a heart level, at the core of who they are. So, through the ideals of diversity, equity, anti-racism and social justice – looking at each of these areas individually – we hope to achieve this goal,” said Rachel George, Middle School Counselor and I-DEAS Steering Committee member.
