Continuing on from before the break, we are highlighting the achievements of all applicants for the 30th Anniversary - Profiles of WAB Alumni Award. Congratulations to each of our student applicants and we are so proud of their achievements.
This week, we will spotlight three student applicants:
Janice - Grade 8
Through her application, Janice showed herself to be an inspired, challenged, and successful learner by setting clear goals and participating in competitions and performances across sports and the arts. She highlighted her futures-thinking mindset through her short novel called “Wings of Innovation - A Rising Star”, a story about a youngster who tackles mental illnesses through technological innovations.
Janice has engaged in a community project promoting the importance of speaking up about problems and has co-organized fundraising activities for the New Sunshine Charity Foundation through an art gallery event and selling desserts at Rock in the Park. She has showcased her critical thinking and effective communication skills by participating in debates and appreciates the opportunity to dive into alternate perspectives, assumptions, and biases.
Janice shared, "I really cherish the experience I gained in applying for the WAB Student Award. Through the preparation process, I acquired a deep understanding of the core values of WAB. I also had the opportunity to review what I have done and achieved in the past 6 years at WAB. All these provide me with a clearer direction of what I need to do and the qualities I need to acquire in order to become a model WAB alumni in the future."
Ethan - Grade 10
Ethan’s application demonstrated how he embodies the attributes of the Profile of WAB alumni by telling the story of his personal growth, innovation, and global citizenship. His application highlighted his ability to create, plan, and take action through his contributions to the school's robotics team and the development of a green wall project. He has engaged with global issues on a local scale through sustainability projects with Profarmer, joining World Clean-up Day, working with Metanoia, and participating in events like the Duke of Edinburgh’s award trip.
Ethan has developed his communication skills through opportunities like Model United Nations, World Scholar’s Cup, and TEDx, where he worked effectively with diverse groups on various projects. He has shown perseverance in overcoming challenges and setting realistic goals, reflecting on his progress, and identifying what he will do next.
"I've been at WAB since second grade, and applying for this award has been a valuable journey of self-reflection, allowing me to recognize my achievements and areas for growth. As I continue through high school and beyond, I look forward to embracing the values of the 'Profiles of WAB Alumni' and actively contributing to our vibrant community," said Ethan.
Ryan - Grade 10
Ryan’s application covered a diverse range of achievements, learnings, and interests. He shows a deep passion for learning and innovation as well as an ability to connect different fields of knowledge. His intercultural competence was showcased through his leadership of the Oracle Bone project and the Poetical China project, and he has made significant impacts locally and globally by presenting this work at international conferences and inspiring others to appreciate the commonalities between Chinese and Western cultures.
Ryan has participated in projects like designing a library for migrant children. For this initiative, he worked with international and local students to create a bio-inspired library design, which ultimately won the competition with construction beginning in 2025. His effective communication skills were also evidenced in his co-direction of the short film "Anna’s Diary," which addressed teenage mental health issues and won international awards.
Ryan expressed, "Of WAB’s 30 years, it has accompanied me through 13 of my own. WAB has given me inspiration, guidance, and resources to pursue my passions and give back to the community. This application has again guided me through personal reflection and goal setting for the future."
