Middle School Concert Supports Education through Charity

Middle School Concert Supports Education through Charity

Music and movement filled the space outside WAB’s Middle School on Friday for a good cause.

The Student Council organized a concert in the building’s new plaza area, inviting the school community to attend in person and via live broadcast. Funds raised at the event will support Educating Girls of Rural China, a foundation that provides scholarships to young women.

Grade 8 student Vanessa Z. and her three bandmates, Mia, Trinity, and Faye, performed “Safe and Sound” from The Hunger Games. Vanessa said the efforts to raise money for young women feel very personal to the four members of her all-female band.

“When we saw the chance to perform for the charity concert, we thought it was an optimal opportunity, as we are contributing to making a change in the world with something we love,” Vanessa and her bandmates said. “We think that the changes EGRC is making are crucial to our society, because many young people in rural areas are lacking the chance to pursue an education. By aiding these individuals, we are actually helping whole communities, since once they're empowered with knowledge, they get more choices in what they want to do in life.”

The concert also included beatboxers, original dances, big bands, orchestras, and more. Members of the Middle School Student Council worked to organize volunteer performers, promote the show, solicit donations, and create an exciting lunch-time event atmosphere.

“We were hoping to unite the Middle School community by supporting EGRC together, raising awareness, and making a difference,” Student Council Vice President Deviana S. said. “We specifically support EGRC because we are fortunate to have an amazing education at WAB and we want to help these girls in rural China also have the opportunity and resources to learn.”

As for encouraging others to contribute their efforts to the cause, Vanessa and her band had a message to share with her classmates and community:

“We would also like to remind everyone that there are many ways we can help a charity or change the world for the better, and we can always find one that best suits us,” she said.
