Hongbao Campaign will Support Education in Rural China

Hongbao Campaign will Support Education in Rural China

Education and community service are two signature characteristics of the WAB community. Our annual Give a Hongbao Campaign brings them together.

The hongbao is a red envelope filled with money traditionally given as a gift around Chinese New Year. WAB Charity Link’s campaign has become an annual tradition for our community, inviting all students, staff, and families to contribute to a collective donation to the non-profit organization, Educating Girls of Rural China.

All students received and brought home a hongbao from Charity Link last week. A transition to remote learning delayed the start of our Year of the Tiger campaign, but we are now inviting each student, teacher, and staff member to fill them with bank notes and bring them back by March 21. You may also write a small message on the back if you'd like. Collection boxes for the filled red packets are in each school section. It will be also possible to donate via WeChat using the QR code found on the message given with the envelope.

In each of the last three years, our community raised 120,000RMB to support EGRC through a series of initiatives and events, which enough for the organization to sponsor the tuition of 20 girls to attend High School. Our goal this year is also to raise 120,000 RMB to provide financial and emotional support to high school students enrolled in EGRC’s program.

EGRC was established in 2005 with the vision that educated women have educated children. In 16 years, EGRC has provided financial sponsorship and emotional support to more than 1,400 girls for their high school and university education, and the girls achieved over 99% graduation rate. Currently there are 535 high school students in EGRC's program, in both Gansu and Yunnan provinces. Visit their website for more information.

“I am grateful to this community who is helping EGRC to enable girls in rural China to receive and continue their education,” Head of WAB Charity Link Delphine Labille said. “Remember that you really can make the difference and help other children have a better future.”
