Four WAB Teams Compete in World Scholars Cup at Yale University

WAB students put their skills to the test in one of the world’s most exciting competitions for young academics.

Eleven Middle and High Schools students traveled to Yale University in the United States to compete in the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions. The students made up four teams – the most ever entered by our school.

To earn qualification to attend the final round, the students competed in regional and global round competitions. They prepared both in WAB student-led clubs and, in some cases, extracurricular classes to sharpen their debating, writing, researching, and quiz skills.

“We were eager to challenge ourselves at a competition consisting of top scholars all around the world and excited about the very fact that the competition was to be held at Yale University,” said Sophie Y., a Grade 9 WAB student. “This experience taught me more than just writing and debate—it taught me the importance of certain qualities and mindsets that are crucial in reaching your goals.”

As Sophie said, the experience went beyond students gaining academic skills. They had the chance to travel together and explore one of North America’s oldest and most historic universities. While on campus, they enjoyed a Q&A panel with current students and got a taste of life at a prestigious American college. Prior to their participation, they focused together on building teamwork skills, determination, and commitment.

But also, as Grade 8 student Cheyanne O. put it, “Our goal was to just try our best and have fun!”

“We took this opportunity because it was a new experience for all of us, her teammate and Grade 7 student Jeremy A. echoed. “I learned that with hard work comes great results. Perseverance and effective collaboration were key in this competition but are also noteworthy life lessons.”

In the end, several of the WAB students and teams came home with gold medals and trophies in a variety of the areas of competition. As a community, we could not be prouder of their dedication, enthusiasm, and accomplishments.

Congratulations to all of the students, including: Jeremy A., Linah R., Cheyanne O., Lilian Z., Sky M., Apple Z., Sally Z., Aaliyah W., Sichen L., Sophie Y., and Billy Z. Special thanks to Grade 10 student Zimu Z and teachers Xiao Xiao and Tao Meng for their support.
